Bala (Gwynedd)
Now in Gwynedd but formerly Merionethshire Bala (Welsh-Y Bala) has a Population of 1,999 (72.5% Welsh speakers) (2021 census). A moat-hill is believed to be a Roman encampment. British and Foreign Bible Society was founded in Bala 1804.
It lies at the north end of Llyn Tegid the largest natural lake in Wales at 3.7 miles (6.0 km) The lake is the only place in the world containing the rare endangered Gwyniad fish (whitefish family) from 10,000 years ago when it was trapped in the lake at the end of the last ice age.
